Chamber names Citizen of the Years, ATHENA Award recipients

The Chamber announces the recipients of two prestigious awards recognizing outstanding commitment to the Lawrence community and its citizens. John Ross is the recipient of the Citizen of the Years award, while Nancy Thellman will receive the ATHENA Award, presented by Crown Toyota Volkswagen. Both awards will be presented to the winners at The Chamber’s Annual Meeting on January 25 at Abe & Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St., Lawrence, Kan.

2019 Citizen of the Years

John Ross moved to Lawrence in 1990 and soon started Laser Logic, Inc., the company he owns and runs to this day. Ross has been a Chamber member since 1992 and graduated from Leadership Lawrence in 1995. Ross has pages worth of accomplishments, both within the business community and serving organizations in Douglas County, including Ride for Cops, the Valor Awards, Rotary, Cottonwood, and LMH Health, just to name a few. Ross was Board Chair for the Chamber in 2012, championing a movement for citizens to shop in Lawrence and buy local.

“John is a bright light, full of energy and passion,” said Bonnie Lowe, President and CEO of The Chamber. “John has served in leadership roles across the community, working to promote local business, helping non-profit organizations, and ensuring a prosperous future for Lawrence and Douglas County.”

2018 Crown Toyota Volkswagen ATHENA Award

A Lawrence native, Nancy Thellman currently serves as a Douglas County Commissioner, representing citizens in the second district, and is currently in the middle of her third term. After moving to a farm and watching her oldest son become a first-generation farmer, Thellman founded Slow Money Northeast Kansas, a division of a national organization that matches investors with farmers and ranchers, working to create a stronger local economy and more vibrant food system. Thellman is also an ordained Presbyterian minister.

“Nancy has been a leader in Douglas County for many years and continues to be a shining example of servant leadership in our community,” said Miles Schnaer, President of Crown Toyota Volkswagen. “Nancy has had great success as a County Commissioner, helps local farmers through her Slow Money network, and gives of her time to non-profit organizations, assuring that Douglas County continues to thrive in many areas.”

  1. This is the perfect blog for anyone who hopes to find out about this topic. You understand a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I personally would want to…HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a topic that has been written about for decades. Great stuff, just wonderful.

  2. Hey! This is kind of off topic but I need some guidance from an established blog. Is it very difficult to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast. I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thanks

  3. I have observed that over the course of building a relationship with real estate proprietors, you’ll be able to come to understand that, in each and every real estate transaction, a percentage is paid. In the long run, FSBO sellers really don’t “save” the fee. Rather, they try to earn the commission by simply doing a great agent’s job. In doing so, they commit their money plus time to conduct, as best they’re able to, the tasks of an agent. Those assignments include getting known the home by means of marketing, representing the home to all buyers, developing a sense of buyer emergency in order to trigger an offer, arranging home inspections, managing qualification check ups with the loan company, supervising fixes, and assisting the closing.

  4. Hello there, I do think your website may be having browser compatibility problems. When I look at your web site in Safari, it looks fine but when opening in IE, it’s got some overlapping issues. I just wanted to provide you with a quick heads up! Other than that, fantastic site.

  5. I’m impressed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s both equally educative and interesting, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The issue is something too few people are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy that I came across this in my search for something relating to this.

  6. After I initially commented I seem to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now whenever a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. There has to be a means you are able to remove me from that service? Cheers.

  7. It’s hard to come by experienced people for this subject, but you seem like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks
