FOCUS LEADERSHIP LAWRENCE: BUILDING AN ACTIVE, ENGAGED COMMUNITY
| 2013 Fall | story by GREG WILLIAMS PRESIDENT/CEO LAWRENCE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE |

 untitled

At the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, leadership is a verb: it is an activity to be practiced, shared and implemented. No program better explains this concept than Leadership Lawrence, which recently kicked off its 32nd year of bringing together local residents to learn more about how Lawrence and Douglas County function and how to put leadership skills into action.

A program of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Lawrence is our community’s civic leadership program. It brings together residents from all walks of life to explore the many facets of the Lawrence-Douglas County community in a meaningful way while learning leadership skills outlined by the Kansas Leadership Center. The program is no small commitment, as class members agree to participate in a two-day opening retreat, nine full-day sessions that focus on a specific aspect of community life and a specific leadership competency such as diagnosing an issue or situation and how to energize others to act with you.

Sixty-three people applied to Leadership Lawrence this year, which was the largest applicant pool in recent memory. This reflects growing recognition that connecting to the Lawrence-Douglas County and participating in civic life is essential to the survival, growth and success of the place we all call home.

Leadership Lawrence now has more than 750 members of the Lawrence-Douglas County that can proudly claim to be program Alumni. Of those alumni, 83% are involved in the community serving on a municipal, political or nonprofit board. Nearly every municipal and charitable board in Lawrence has at least one Leadership Lawrence alumni.

But Leadership Lawrence isn’t just a fun way to get to know the community; it’s a sound business practice for our region. The ties between a healthy community rich in arts programs, social services and a strong business community are undisputable. Research indicates that strong communities with strong civic engagement and active community members are more successful in economic development projects. Conversely, research also shows that a community with an active, growing economic development program has more resources (money, volunteers and volunteer leaders, in-kind donations) distributed to those aspects of community life we love so well.

The Chamber is proud of the Leadership Lawrence program and its more than 750 alumni, and we look forward to seeing great things come from the Class of 2014. By working together, we will continue to build Lawrence and Douglas County into a stronger, economically stable and vibrant place to live and work.

  7. I am extremely glad to have come across this information. I realise that there are an inadequate number of conversations on this subject,
despite the fact that it undoubtedly can affect an appreciable section within the citizenry.
I’m planning to submit further contributions on this page sometime soon, in the middle of this chaotic life as an event massage
    coordinator

I can’t believe everything we challenge ourselves with in our lives makes a difference and is truly worth
the constant worry and decades off our lives. All the time squandered
thinking about the assorted things that people experience just about every day can be really important, as no other person is going to deal with
existence for us. I feel that people should be even more mentally stable.
Technology is delightful, but so much of everything we might know about is indeed subjective.
Making a drink of tea is a zen activity that takes one back again to the
present minute. We have to become more in the here and now, free of being
confused by existence and the drama we encounter every day.

  8. I do not know if it’s just me or if perhaps everyone else encountering issues with your blog.

It seems like some of the text within your content are running off the screen. Can somebody else please provide feedback and let me know if this
is happening to them too? This could be a issue with my web browser because I’ve had this happen before.
    Many thanks

  9. You actually make it seem really easy along with your presentation however I to find this
matter to be really something which I think I would by
no means understand. It sort of feels too complicated and very huge for me.
I am taking a look ahead on your subsequent post, I’ll attempt to get the
    grasp of it!

  10. I work as a Massage For Events Planner. I regularly wonder exactly what got individuals
started writing a blog. Finally, a blogger has something purposeful to talk about, whether or not amusing, informative, instructional,
or otherwise thrilling to some people. I suppose a great deal of bloggers expect to support other
folks. For sure, generally there are really individuals drawn to
the variety of expression mainly because it may be profitable and
convert straight into a fully committed career.
I take a look at more web logs in a day in comparison with anyone in my township, I may easily ensure you.
I imagine that’s just about all far too obscure, honestly.
Each and every blog author gets started publishing
for a distinctive, one of a kind justification. In my work, individuals book a Massage For Events
for both standard (birthday celebration, management and business event, etc.) motives,
as well as exclusive motives like a Spiritual purpose.

Precisely why do a certain amount of writers remain, even while many people toss
in the towel? It’s interest! An interest for composing, a passion for helping or helping to make you and
me guffaw or accurately which I don’t know.
A zeal for storytelling for most, I am certain. Existence truly does have a message, however people have
to labor at appreciation of it. I just think blogging
and site-building can actually be a form of Self-Development vocation aiding silent and invisible masses of folks.
Obviously, there are sites produced by Sears
and Gimbles (selected bankrupted retailers deliberately!

hehe) but I really mean serious websites.
Personal blogs. Small company sites. School websites.
    Community sites. Weblogs with soul.

  11. I got this web site from my friend who shared with
me about this web site and now this time I am visiting this website and
reading very informative posts at this place.

  12. May I simply just say what a comfort to discover someone who actually understands what
they’re discussing on the internet. You definitely know how
to bring a problem to light and make it important. More people need to check this out and understand
this side of the story. I was surprised you’re not more popular because you most certainly possess the
    gift.
